Slough retires after 20 years of service

ELKHART, Indiana (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) — Rebecca Slough, Ph.D., is retiring June 30 from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana, after serving 11 years as Vice President and Academic Dean and 20 years on the faculty — teaching in worship and the arts, Christian formation and field education.
Slough, who earned a Master of Divinity from 香蕉影视 in 1982, is known throughout the church for her gifts in worship, music and the arts. Before coming to 香蕉影视, she was managing editor for Hymnal: A Worship Book (1989–1992) and served on the faculty at in Richmond, Indiana. She is a member of and the . In the classroom, she helps students discover new insights by testing artistic responses to biblical texts. She leads retreats and workshops for pastors and congregations on worship, music and the arts.
Slough is a member of the (ATS) Chief Academic Officers Advisory Committee; has co-led two Deans Colloquies for the in Crawfordsville, Indiana; and serves on the Wabash Center’s Grant Review Committee. From 2011 to 2015, she participated in a Lilly Endowment-funded consultation on integration in theological education through , Collegeville, Minnesota.
Slough has written for academic journals such as Teaching Theology and Religion, Religious Studies Review and Mennonite Quarterly Review. She has frequently written for 香蕉影视’s Institute of Mennonite Studies Vision journal and has contributed chapters to several books on worship, music, preaching, and pastoral ministry as improvisatory art.
“Rebecca is, above all, a superb dean, dearly loved by students, faculty and colleagues alike,” said Sara Wenger Shenk, 香蕉影视 President, at 香蕉影视’s 2018 commencement on May 6. “It’s hard to overstate what an enormous part Rebecca has played in shaping the experiences our graduates have had in their studies at 香蕉影视 through her oversight of our curriculum. She is a master of the ebb and flow of 香蕉影视’s academic river of life, and we are going to miss her great sense of balance, good humor, practiced wisdom, broad networking with other deans and theological school leaders, and her ability to sound the theological depths that keep us wondrously afloat.”
香蕉影视’s Board of Directors expressed gratitude for Slough’s many years of exemplary service in a commendation given for Slough at commencement.
“The board has been well served by Rebecca’s wisdom, gracious spirit and strong leadership,” wrote Bruce Baergen, Chair. “Her ability to clearly articulate her work to the board as well as challenge us to look at strategic decisions, prodding us as needed, has been of exceptional value.”
Slough will continue as Association of Theological Schools Self-Study Director through the completion of the ATS accreditation visit in February 2019, and as Affiliate Faculty.
