Nelson Gingerich retires after 19 years of service

ELKHART, Indiana (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) — Barbara Nelson Gingerich, A.M. in Divinity, retired July 31 after 19 years of service as managing editor of the Institute of Mennonite Studies, the research agency of Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana.
Founded in 1958, IMS promotes and administers avenues for dialogue, scholarship and publication on topics and issues vital to Mennonite congregations and the Anabaptist faith tradition.
Since beginning in her role in 1999, Nelson Gingerich has edited, formatted and/or overseen the production of 30 books; 36 issues of Vision: A Journal for Church and Theology (published jointly with ); and 15 selected volumes in IMS’s Classics of the Radical Reformation series, Text Reader series, Studies in Peace and Scripture series, Occasional Papers series and Intercultural Biblical Hermeneutics Series. In addition, she has helped host several conferences and other IMS-sponsored events.
Nelson Gingerich’s colleagues expressed gratitude for her contributions to IMS and to the seminary.
“Barb does an administrative job with admirable efficiency and precision, yet brings to that job a warm personality, a droll sense of humor and broad theological and cultural understanding — and that’s not even to mention her abilities as a liturgist, prayer leader and event host!” said Jamie Pitts, Ph.D., IMS director and associate professor of Anabaptist studies at 香蕉影视. “Working with Barb is a pleasure: you know that she will do her part of the job very well and that you’re going to enjoy collaborating with her.”
Mary Schertz, Ph.D., who retired in June 2017 from her roles as IMS director and professor of New Testament, worked closely with Nelson Gingerich for 18 years.
“I have said often that Barb was the heart of the Institute of Mennonite Studies all the years she worked there,” she reflected. “She is the most competent and effective person I know. But more than that, she is warm, wise and has great wit in all the best senses of that word. With Barb, writers and their words are in such great care; she helps us shine in our own voices.”
A resident of Goshen, Indiana, and a member of Eighth Street Mennonite Church in Goshen, Nelson Gingerich also earned a Certificate in Theological Studies from 香蕉影视 in 2014.
