Institute of Mennonite Studies names new managing editor

ELKHART, Indiana (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) — David C. Cramer, Ph.D., of South Bend, Indiana, is the new managing editor of the Institute of Mennonite Studies (IMS), the research agency of Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (香蕉影视) in Elkhart, Indiana. Cramer, who began Aug. 6, succeeds Barbara Nelson Gingerich, A.M. in Divinity, who retired July 31 after 19 years of service.
Founded in 1958, IMS promotes and administers avenues for dialogue, scholarship and publication on topics and issues vital to Mennonite congregations and the Anabaptist faith tradition.
“I’m excited to welcome David as managing editor,” said Jamie Pitts, Ph.D., IMS director and associate professor of Anabaptist studies at 香蕉影视. “He brings considerable experience to the job, as well as enthusiasm and creative vision for IMS’s future. His passions for editing, Anabaptist theology and history, and ministry make him uniquely qualified to contribute to our mission of fostering scholarship for the church.”
Cramer earned a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from in Waco, Texas; an M.A. in Philosophy of Religion from in Deerfield, Illinois; an M.Div. in Cross-cultural Ministry from in Deerfield; and a B.A. in Biblical Studies and Philosophy from in Mishawaka, Indiana. He also audited courses in Anabaptist theology and ethics at 香蕉影视.
He brings to his new role more than a decade of experience in Christian publishing, including serving as associate project editor at and in Grand Rapids, Michigan; editor of the Missionary Church historical journal, ; and editorial assistant of the international bioethics journal, .
His own scholarship focuses on Anabaptist-Mennonite theology and ethics. He was co-editor of (Pickwick, 2012) and has published articles in , , and elsewhere. He has also written popular essays in , , and the , among others; and he’s currently working on a co-authored book tentatively titled A Field Guide to Christian Nonviolence (Baker Academic, forthcoming).
In addition to publishing, Cramer has taught graduate courses in theology and ethics at and Bethel College (Indiana) and undergraduate courses in religion and philosophy at Baylor University and Bethel College. He has also served in various local church contexts, including , a Mennonite intentional community in Waco, Texas, that is part of and ; , a predominantly Korean-American congregation in Chicago, Illinois; and various churches in the denomination. He currently serves part time as teaching pastor at , a Missionary Church congregation in an urban neighborhood of South Bend, and said he looks forward to his pastorate complementing his work as IMS managing editor.

Cramer was born and raised in Mishawaka, Indiana. His wife, Andrea, is founder and director of , a nonprofit that cultivates mutual relationships among South Bend area’s refugee, immigrant and non-immigrant communities. They have two young children.
“It’s an honor to be entrusted with task of carrying on Barbara Nelson Gingerich’s legacy of excellence at IMS,” Cramer reflected. “As IMS managing editor, I look forward to combining my passions for theologically robust Anabaptist scholarship, christologically rooted Christian higher education and spiritually enriched ecclesial formation.
